Motorcycle Parking

The college that I work at has two distinct areas for motorcycles to park in. They are free to park in spaces (which annoys a lot a car drivers, I found out), but they also have two specific areas to park in.
I normally park in the northern motorcycle parking because there is a fence around it, blocking cars, and because it's farther inside the college, and it's closer.

The southern motorcycle parking is really just a bunch of parking spaces that have been redesignated for motorcycles.

The last time we had it painted, the guy must have used water colors because the paint really didn't last long, and complaints started coming in about cars once again parking in motorcycle parking.

A few weeks ago, while on my way to work, I made my daily stop for coffee at Safeway. Along the way, I noticed that the call center had made a slight change to two spaces.

They had placed two concrete parking bumpers at the end of the spaces, preventing cars from using the spaces. Upon closer inspection, I found that the two spaces had yellow concrete parking bumpers on the perimeter, making a parking area just for motorcycles.

Cool.

After that I was telling folks at work about it, and since it was found that the parking bumpers were affordable, the college will be putting in the bumpers in the southern motorcycle area.

Cool.

I think that both motorcyclists and motorists will be better off if there is a more visible designator for the area.

A sign and bad parking lot painting just wasn't cutting it.

P.S.

I didn't have a picture of the motorcycle parking at the call center and each post needs a picture so I included a picture that I took last week.

We had several middle school choirs on campus for a competition, making for quite a lot of little faces on a campus that normally had ages 18+.

I snapped this picture of pizza boxes that one school had stacked neatly by the trash.

That is a lot of pizza boxes.

Ta!

  1. LOL - who'd a thunk...pizza boxes at a college campus! When I went through the design program there we had our own little kitchenette. cuz us students had no life outside of school and well, we had to eat.

The motorcycles parked in the same place they do today (north). I always walked pass them on the way to class, but I wasn't a rider then, so didn't pay too much attention. I'm glad they're improving some of the parking area for riders. The bumpers sound like a good idea.

  2. So how did it ever shake out about parking in the triangular spaces beside the regular spots? You know where one of our folks got a ticket? It's not yellow paint and there's no sign. Seems a good spot to park and not take up a car space.

I took up car spaces a couple of times this last weekend.

  3. The improvements in the Motorcycle Parking will benefit car drivers because the most common ticket we write right now is parking in Motorcycle Parking.

The latest info is that the Motorcycle Parking in that lot may be moved forward one lane and be next to the Handicapped spaces.

This will benefit all because the motorcycles will not be taking up what car drivers feel are "their" spaces, the college will not have to spend as much for bumpers, and it will be a bit more secure for motorcycles. (Yay! Drinks all around, but not on campus!)

We did have the parking lots painted a bit ago, but I think the guy used water color because they didn't last even an entire term. Which is one of the reasons why we have problems with cars parking in Motorcycle Parking. They can't see the lines and don't know where the lines are.

The painting guy wandered into our office before he made his effort in the lots and we expressed our wish that he paint the "endcaps" on the parking rows with stripes, making more of a visual deterrent to parking. But I don't think he even did the entire parking lot, much less stripe the endcaps, and I don't think he cared much what color paint he used.

Motorcycles are okay to take up car spaces and even share car spaces with other motorcycles. As long as none of the motorcycles are being blocked in, it's fine.

Generally, we don't have a problem with parking except the first few weeks of Fall Term. With the increased enrollment, parking is becoming more of an issue, but at this time spaces are first come first served, motorcycles welcome in car spaces or motorcycle parking.

  5. Dean:

Sorry for the long stare in the parking lot. We have been having quite a bit of trouble in that lot with youn'uns peeling out and taking off.

It never occurred to me that it was you guys that I saw that evening! I always a bit slow in the uptake!
